In U.S. breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer. In fact, approximately 1 in 8 women in this country can expect to get it sometime during their lives. Since early detection is the best weapon in the fight against breast cancer, effective risk assessment is critical to help identify women who can benefit from more intensive breast cancer surveillance.

The important role of imaging professionals in risk assessment

In a recent AuntMinnie article, Dr. Stacy Smith-Foley, the Medical Director of The Breast Center at CARTI, captures the important role of imaging professionals in breast cancer risk assessment.

“Cancer risk assessment is a necessary component of care in the breast imaging space as it provides the opportunity for radiologists to make personalized screening recommendations based on a combination of factors, such as age, genetic predisposition, and breast composition,” she writes.

“As breast imagers, we know that mammography is imperfect and is more likely to fail/have a false-negative reading in patients at high levels of risk, so it is important for us to identify those individuals who would benefit from additional and more sensitive breast cancer screening,” Dr. Smith-Foley adds. “Without knowing a patient’s risk and genetic mutation status, we are diminished in our ability to screen with the most effective modality. Having this information fundamentally changes our approach and recommendations. …”

Incorporating effective risk assessment in the breast imaging setting

Dr. Smith-Foley also notes that “incorporating risk assessment and genetic testing into practice is actually quite easy.”

“The tools for risk assessment and guideline recommendations for testing are widely available and easily accessible, and genetic testing is typically 100% covered by insurance for qualifying patients as a screening under the Affordable Care Act,” she writes.

About Our Speaker

Dr. Smith-Foley has 17 years of clinical experience as a dedicated breast imaging specialist and has been the Medical Director of The Breast Center at CARTI since 2019. A graduate of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), she completed her Diagnostic Radiology residency at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville followed by a fellowship in breast imaging at the University of Washington/Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle. Board-certified in Diagnostic Radiology with a Subspecialty in Breast Imaging, Dr. Smith-Foley is a passionate medical educator, patient advocate, and leader in her field. She is a member of the Hologic Scientific Advisory Board, speaker for Myriad Genetics, advisor for Beekley Medical, co-author of several peer-reviewed journal articles, and participant in multiple breast imaging reader studies — including those related to computer-aided detection and digital breast tomosynthesis.

Dr. Smith-Foley and her husband, Chris Foley, have been married 27 years and have a son in college and daughter in high school. She enjoys an active lifestyle with her family — especially being a “dance mom,” traveling, and volunteering in the community.
